In Memory

Sharon Lee Matthews (Juen)

Sharon loved being a mother to her family, adventure travel and the outdoors. She was an avid environmentalist and community volunteer. Her career took her to the headquarters of REI and most recently, The Trust for Public Land. She and Richard Juen met as students at Texas A&M and married soon after graduation. They were together 41 years. His career took them to El Paso, Albuquerque and her favorite of all places, a suburb south of Seattle. She adored hiking with her family through area's the lush greenery and mountains. Sharon learned of her pancreatic cancer in early May and died four weeks later. As he cared for her, Richard said she never once complained or felt sorry for herself. Always a fairly private person, she chose not to disclose her condition to many, because she didn't want to upset them. Although her daughter Lindsey and fiancee Austin are planning a July 7, 2018 wedding, Lindsey donned her wedding gown and she and Austin were able to have a civil service wedding at Sharon's bedside a few days before she passed. To the core of her being, Sharon was loving, kind, empathetic and authentic. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.

Sharon was my best friend at Mac. In the mid-1990's, we both lived in the Seattle area. She and Rich had their kids by then, and we made lots of wonderful memories together. Her death was so sudden that it's really thrown me for a loop. Her only daughter Lindsey, and Lindsey's fiance planned their wedding long ago for tomorrow--July 7, 2018. Sharon's memorial service was just yesterday, July 5, 2018. It's heartbreaking that Lindsey and the family won't have Sharon at the ceremony; she would have loved seeing her dear daughter get married to such a good guy. And here's an interesting twist: Lindsey's fiance is the son of one of our fellow Mac 1974 classmates-John Brent Wertz! And Lindsey's husband is Austin Wertz.
